One of the most revered actresses on both sides of the Atlantic, Dame Maggie Smith was born Margaret Natalie Smith in Ilford, Essex, on 28 December 1934. Smith created a gallery of indelible characters on stage and screen, which ran the gamut from repressed spinsters to comical eccentrics. She has appeared in more than 60 films and over 70 plays, and is one of Britain's most recognizable actresses and one of the greatest actresses of all time. Maggie Smith was made a Dame by Queen Elizabeth II in 1990 for contributions to the performing arts, and a Companion of Honour in 2014 for services to drama.
